Here's a list of questions to ask yourself and convey to potential marketing research firms when you ask for a proposal.

  1. What are your marketing research objectives?
  2. The objectives involve understanding exactly what it is that you seek to accomplish by obtaining marketing research information.

  3. Do you want to make a specific decision?

  4. If so, what are the decision options you face? Do you need background information on a new product category? Is this the first study you've conducted in the category or topic, or is it part of a larger research effort?

  5. Are you designing the research methodology, or are you focused on your decision and the information you need?

  6. This is an important quesiton that will drive your selection of a marketing research firm. If you have studied carfully the research and decision issue, and have research design experience you may have the expertise to select the methodology yourself. In this case, you may be best served by going directly to a data collection agency

  7. What do you need?

  8. There are several levels of assistance you may need. These range from data collection firms, "full-service" marketing research firms, or consulting and research firms.
